How rental pricing actually works
Rental rates are quoted by day, week, or month — and the longer you commit, the lower the per-day cost gets. A weekly rate is typically 3 to 4 times the daily rate; monthly is usually 9 to 12 times the daily. If your job runs 4 days or more, the weekly rate almost always wins. If it runs 3 weeks or more, take the month.
What you'll pay (typical ranges)
Mini excavators: $250–$475/day, $750–$1,400/week. Mid-size excavators (10–24t): $650–$1,100/day, $2,400–$4,000/week. Skid steers: $275–$625/day. Wheel loaders: $450–$1,800/day depending on size. What's not in the rate
Delivery and pickup are billed separately, usually by trip or by kilometre, and can run from $150 for a local mini to $1,500+ for a large machine moved on a tandem float. Fuel is on you — most suppliers fuel up at delivery and charge for refill at the end. Damage waivers (10–14% of rental) and environmental fees may also apply.
Insurance and damage
Most Canadian rentals require you to carry a liability and physical-damage policy covering the equipment's replacement value. A damage waiver from the supplier is an alternative that's faster to arrange but more expensive over time. Confirm what's required before the machine ships.
How to lower your effective cost
Pick the smallest machine that does the work. Book early — last-minute rentals get whatever's on the lot, often the wrong size. Commit to a week or a month if the job justifies it. Stage work so the machine isn't sitting idle on the clock. And get multiple quotes — supplier rates vary more than most people think.
